Slope, Offset & Power
Grading Modes in Chromate
In color correction, Slope, Power, Offset refers to a method of adjusting the color balance and contrast of an image by manipulating its RGB (red, green, blue) color channels. These terms originate from the ASC CDL (American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List) standard and are used to apply primary color corrections in a mathematical way. Chromate uses Slope, Power & Offset internally while resolve refers to Lift, Gamma & Gain. Here is what each term means:
Slope
Slope is a multiplier and works like Gain in DaVinci Resolve. The brighter an image area is, the greater the effect of a change in slope. Dark areas, on the other hand, are affected little or not at all.
Power
The power adjustment changes the gamma of the image. It applies a non-linear transformation to the color values, effectively adjusting the midtones without significantly altering the shadows and highlights.
Offset
The offset adjustment shifts the color values up or down by a certain amount, similar to adjusting the brightness. This uniformly lifts or lowers the color values across the entire image, affecting shadows, midtones, and highlights equally.
In practice, these controls are used together to achieve the desired look for an image.
Need more Controls?
With Slope, Power & Offset there is no way to independently edit the dark areas in an image. The only way to effectively manipulate dark image areas is Offset. Unfortunately Offset works additively and enhances the entire spectrum in addition to the dark areas. This is why dirtyLens has developed the Formula Tab, where you can assemble a lift control by yourself.
